[3D Printing] Bambu Lab Launches R1 55W CO₂ Laser Cutter and Engraver

Big Jobs, Made Easy: Bambu Lab Launches R1 55W CO₂ Laser Cutter and Engraver

Bambu Lab has officially taken a major step beyond 3D printing with the launch of the all-new R1 55W CO₂ Laser Cutter and Engraver. The R1 continues Bambu Lab's product philosophy of prioritizing automation, ease of use, and desktop manufacturing integration, allowing cutting and engraving tasks for materials like wood, acrylic, and leather to be completed more intuitively in studios, design spaces, or professional creative environments.

Bambu Lab R1 55W CO2 Laser Cutter and Engraver

The R1 utilizes a 55W CO₂ laser with a maximum processing speed of up to 1000 mm/s, and incorporates features such as automatic optical path calibration, visual positioning, autofocus, vibration compensation, and multiple safety monitoring systems. For users already familiar with Bambu Lab 3D printing equipment, the R1 further extends desktop manufacturing capabilities into the realm of laser processing.

One Laser, Handles Multiple Materials

R1 Wood and Acrylic Processing Application

A major advantage of the CO₂ laser is its ability to handle materials that are difficult to process directly with diode lasers, such as transparent acrylic and glass. The R1 can cut and engrave wood, acrylic, leather, paper, and fabric, and can also engrave surfaces including glass, stone, and some coated metals.

R1 Composite Material Model Application

Regarding cutting capability, the R1 can process thicker wood and acrylic. According to Bambu Lab's official data, the machine can handle up to approximately 18 mm black walnut plywood and up to approximately 20 mm acrylic. The standard working area is 600 × 300 mm; with the optional Conveyor accessory, it can handle long materials up to approximately 3,000 mm.

R1 Long Material and Large-Scale Processing Application

Automatic Optical Path Calibration, Reducing Complex Manual Adjustments

Bambu Lab R1 Automatic Optical Path and Sensing System

Traditional CO₂ laser systems require multiple mirrors to guide the beam to the focusing lens, meaning that any misalignment of the mirrors can affect laser power and processing performance. Typical equipment often requires users to manually test and adjust repeatedly.

The R1's Auto Laser Alignment function uses sensors to determine beam position and coordinates with motorized mirror adjustment mechanisms to perform corrections. The manual tuning process, which used to be performed individually, is significantly simplified into an automated workflow, making daily maintenance and setup easier.

TriSense System: Collaborative Sensing of Position, Height, and Motion

Bambu Lab R1 TriSense System

The R1's TriSense system integrates cameras, lasers, and encoders to identify material and pattern positions, measure surface height during processing, and track tool head movement. The system includes a BirdsEye camera, tool head camera, Pinpoint positioning laser, Distance Measurement Laser, and XY-axis encoders.

This system assists with autofocus and improves tasks like curved surface engraving, positioning of small objects, and pattern contour alignment. For applications requiring precise laser processing on printed patterns, official data states that contour tracking accuracy can reach within 0.2 mm.

R1 Transparent Acrylic Artistic Processing

Continuing Bambu Lab’s High-Speed Motion Control Technology

Bambu Lab R1 Laser Processing Platform

During laser processing, the tool head needs to frequently accelerate, decelerate, and change direction. The R1 extends the motion control experience Bambu Lab accumulated from 3D printing equipment to laser processing, adding Vibration Compensation and Speed-Synced Laser Power control.

Vibration Compensation reduces mechanical resonance generated during rapid turns, helping maintain sharp contours; speed-synced laser power adjusts energy output based on movement speed to reduce uneven depth caused by speed variations in the same pattern. Combined with the optional Vision Encoder calibration board, mechanical deviations after long-term use can be further corrected.

More Comprehensive Safety Design

Bambu Lab R1 Studio Usage Context

In a fully enclosed state, the R1 is designed as a Class 1 laser system according to IEC 60825-1. The chassis is equipped with safety mechanisms such as lid-open stop, flame monitoring, and an emergency stop switch, utilizing cross-flow ventilation to draw smoke away from the chamber during processing.

The optional E1 Pro air purifier can be directly connected to the R1 exhaust port, using multi-layer filters and activated carbon to treat smoke, fine particles, and odors. An Auto Fire Extinguishing system is also available as an option.

Safety Note: After installing the Riser Base or Conveyor, the chassis is no longer fully enclosed. Official data indicates that the device shifts from Class 1 to Class 4 in this state; users must wear protective glasses suitable for CO₂ lasers, and it should be operated by personnel who have received relevant training.
Bambu Lab R1 and Desktop Manufacturing Equipment Integration

Integrating into the Bambu Lab Ecosystem

The R1 continues the existing account and software experience of Bambu Lab, controlled via Bambu Suite on Windows and macOS. MakerWorld is also continuously expanding its laser-related content, allowing creators who already use Bambu Lab 3D printing equipment to add laser cutting and engraving to their workflow within the same ecosystem.

R1 Laser Cutting Creative Application

Who is the R1 Suitable For?

The R1 is primarily aimed at creators, small studios, designers, woodworkers, personalized product makers, and educational/maker spaces who wish to add laser processing to their existing production workflows. For those already using 3D printing, laser cutting can complement processes such as flat sheet material, wood, transparent acrylic, leather, and glass engraving; and when combined with the Conveyor, it can extend to processing materials with longer dimensions.
